Coffee with my Sister

We live to learn. Life is about learning, experiences, and there are so many opportunities to grow. Take time to learn. You won’t know if you don’t try it.

I had the pleasure of having a “Coffee and Conversation” session with my sister, who has made it a point to live out her desire “to live to learn”. She is an adventurer at heart and a faithful risk-taker.

A few fun facts that you may not know about her is that when she was little, she had the self-control of a serious adult saving up for retirement. She would save the $1 her grandpa would give her to buy a treat from the ice-cream truck, the $50 she got for her birthday from our parents, and the other $60 that grandma and grandpa gave her for Christmas. After all of that time saving, she would blow Christopher and I away with a gift that we could only dream of getting as children. Her frugal view on finances allowed her to become who she wanted to be. She was able to buy a camera, and she became a photographer because she knew how to save in order to buy what she really needed and be who she wanted to be at a very young age.

My sister is an artist. She used to paint, sculpt, sew, draw. She was an archeologist for a day where she found opossum bones in our backyard and kept them for safe keeping. She became a herpetologist where till this day she has a pet snake that shares space in her room. She became a gymnast and became very talented in the area of tricking which is the art of kicking and flipping with style. She has danced on stage and in her own home. She has taught herself to make clothes. She has pierced her own nose. She learned how to cut hair. She has traveled out of state. She is a health enthusiast who has been a vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, and back to a straight up carnivore.

All this to say, she truly has embodied this idea that we are here to “live to learn”. Living this out takes being a risk-taker. Throughout experiencing all of these different hobbies, she has been able to build so many relationships along the way with people she used to take photos of when she was really little and displayed them all over our childhood walls. She built relationships with gaining knowledge from artists, reptile lovers, gymnasts, dancers, seamstresses, hair-stylists, travelers, and health enthusiasts. While being able to build community, she has also found pieces of herself along the way. This year, her new feat she desires to accomplish is creating an Etsy shop where she can sell her upcoming brand of clothes, Viva La PLUR, for the rave community. She truly desires to live at peace, love, unity, and respect (PLUR) with all people, and she desires to sink roots and build friendships. This year, she will be graduating nursing school, and her ultimate goal is discover more of who she is.

All in all, I encourage you with a very simple challenge which is to live this week with the mindset that you are “to live to learn”. Try something new that you have been desiring to do and find more of who you are created to be. Live life as an adventurer, risk-taker, and take more leaps of faith and not let fear drive your life.
